Lord and Savior

…but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.
2 Peter 3:18*

In studying the combined titles of Christ, word order is very important. Lord and Savior only occurs four times in the New Testament and interestingly enough, all are found in 2 Peter. In the Old Testament, three times it says, “I, the LORD am your Savior” (Isaiah 43:3, 49:26, 60:16). Although exact wording varies slightly, there is an additional two times that says “I am the LORD, besides me there is no savior” (Isaiah 43:11;Hosea 13:4).

It’s worth noting that the reverse order is not used even once, although the phrase is popular in modern evangelism. Frequently people are heard to say, “Just invite Jesus into your heart as Savior and Lord.” Although it might not be done consciously, the subliminal message that is communicated here is that Jesus is sought after as Savior and then somewhere down the line He may or may not become Lord. It can be argued that those who put the term Savior before Lord are not really shifting the spiritual emphasis. However, the part that is undeniable is that many sinners are eager to make Jesus their Savior (they don’t want to go to hell) without any intention of making Him their Lord.

In one sense there is no chronological order to this title, because Jesus is both Lord and Savior. At the same time, Christ instantly and automatically becomes the Savior of everyone who owns Him as Lord.

As the Lord of lords, the Savior has power over sin and death and hell, so He can and will save every sinner that comes to Him. As Savior who came to suffer and die as a substitute for sinners, true faith demands that He be loved, cherished, and obeyed as Lord.

That is why the two titles are actually one and Jesus is Lord and Savior.

True God

…That we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true,
in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.
1 John 5:20

The Lord Jesus is the True God which is something that true believers already know. However, to even need a title like this concludes the existence of fake gods that would deceive people allowing them to usurp the position of the True God.

In modern society, it’s anathema (an evil) to suggest that someone else’s religion is really a lie. For many, it is preferable to allow someone to go to hell unchallenged, than to risk the chance of them becoming offended.

Recently, a kindergarten student was sent home from class because he was having an asthma attack. Unfortunately, he died in the hospital a few hours later. Before school the next day, the principal called a teachers’ meeting to present talking points concerning discussing the child’s death with students. If a teacher was to be asked, “Is he in heaven now?” or other religious questions, teachers were instructed to say “something non-denominational” such as, “Everyone has different ideas and beliefs about what happens when we die. We don’t really know what ‘Johnny’ (not his real name) and his family believe, but he was a good person.”

How sad! At a very teachable moment, Christian teachers are forbidden to discuss anything about heaven and faith with students. With many years of experience in public education, I’ve seen repeatedly that it’s only the Christian teachers that follow the rules and do what they are told to do. Many atheist and agnostic teachers do what they jolly well please and don’t follow guidelines that they don’t like. It is rules like these that try to discourage any discussion of the True God. The lie that anything anyone could ever choose to believe is valid has become the official doctrine of modern society. To believe that only the Lord Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life cannot be allowed or tolerated by the establishment, even though He is the True God

Rejected by Men

Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious,
1 Peter 2:4

Choosing and rejecting go hand in hand. Whether it’s a new car or a brand of deodorant, once a buyer has selected what he wants, he’s rejected all the competition. In matters of faith, it all comes down to what a person is going to do with Christ: choose Him or reject Him.

Judas Iscariot wanted money more than the Savior. The mob outside the governor’s palace held a demonstration to get a murderer released while shouting down Jesus. Pontius Pilate condemned an innocent man to death, choosing political expediency instead. That’s the way it has been throughout the centuries. Multitudes have sold the Lord short, choosing rather things of dubious value.

Making bad decisions always has consequences. Some people pay thousands of dollars more than others for the same make and model of car, because they trusted their salesman to be honest. Believing a lie is usually linked with making bad decisions. This world claims to offer more benefits than can be found in Christ Jesus, but that is a deception that keeps people out of heaven.

The only real reason that people reject the Master for something else is that they don’t see His value; they don’t know He is Precious.

The enemies of God lie to us about what really matters. They have rejected Christ and the eternal life He offers. They go about trying to deceive others, but don’t understand that they themselves have been deceived (2 Timothy 3:13). How can they refuse the most valuable gift in the universe? The answer is simple. They believed a lie and rejected the truth. The Savior continues to be Rejected by Men.

Sun of Righteousness

But to you who fear My name The Sun of Righteousness shall arise With healing in His wings; And you shall go out And grow fat like stall-fed calves.
Malachi 4:2

Here is an astronomical title on the order of morning star and dayspring. It makes us look to the heavens to see things we’ve seen many times before and then relate that to the character of Christ.

The sun not only radiates light and warmth, but is the source of life for everything on the green planet. Without the sun, plants would be unable to carry on photosynthesis which produces food for all living things and without global warming, all water would be ice and nothing could survive. Sunshine is so intense that it will sunburn the retinas of anyone who looks directly at it. Light also reveals the colors and patterns of everything in God’s creation.

Jesus Christ is hailed as the Sun of Righteousness. Just as Earth’s star is the source of all light, the Lord is the source of righteousness to a world of sinful men. The Bible declares, “As it is written: ‘There is none righteous, no, not one’” (Romans 3:10). Even the little goodness we have on our own is gross in the eyes of God: “But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags” (Isaiah 64:6).

In the Old Testament, God told the city of Jerusalem, “For Zion’s sake I will not hold My peace, And for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, Until her righteousness goes forth as brightness, And her salvation as a lamp that burns” (Isaiah 62:1). In the New Testament we see the source of that righteousness; “But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God — and righteousness and sanctification and redemption” (1 Corinthians 1:30).

Natural sunlight has great therapeutic value. Depression, scabies, and even rickets greatly improve by going outside into bright light. Jesus rises as the Sun of Righteousness with healing in His wings for a sin-sick world, because He is able to disinfect our human nature by irradiating it with His sinless perfection. That indeed is a glorious Son Rise.

Lord of Both the Dead and the Living

For to this end Christ died and rose and lived again, that He might be Lord of both the dead and the living.
Romans 14:9

Not long ago, I saw a bumper sticker that read “Union Members Vote!” Soon after that, I saw another one declaring “Christians Vote!” One bumper sticker I’ve never seen is “Dead People Vote!” although that also seems to be true.

After every election there are stories and editorials that reveal how many deceased citizens cast ballots. Although their bodies are no longer around, it seems that their political voices are not defunct. Actually, what is happening is a form of voter fraud where a living person votes in the name of someone they met in the obituaries.

Legally, dead people can’t vote because the law says they have ceased to be; they no longer exist. Actually that’s not true. They’ve just become non-residents, which also makes them ineligible to vote.

The true essence of a person is his/her soul and spirit. They are real, but can’t be measured or weighed. They aren’t bound in a physical body which can be seen, because they don’t have mass and form. That body eventually wears out or breaks down, but that person’s everlasting soul remains even after the body is buried. That spiritual person moves on to “the place of the dead” (i.e. Hades, Sheol). State, local, and national governments don’t have jurisdiction there, but order and authority are still very evident.

Christ Jesus is the Lord of Both the Dead and the Living. He reigns over the dead, because He’s gone through death, established residency there, and conquered it. He is the undisputed Lord of all that have gone before.

It is safe to say that many more dead people acknowledge Jesus as Lord than the living. Living souls worship other gods or things more than the Master Creator, but one day that is all going to change. At the final Judgment day every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord of Both the Dead and the Living.

Lord of Peace

Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace
always in every way.
The Lord be with you all.
2 Thessalonians 3:16

Stress – Comes from rush hour traffic, crying babies, whining toddlers, ungrateful teenagers, and nagging spouses. It compounds as bills increase, the work-load becomes heavier, and the tyranny of the urgent becomes oppressive.

Anxiety – The fear of not knowing what comes next; the unease that stems from all the negatives of the status quo, and the worry that things won’t get better; they’ll only get worse. Oh-oh, here comes the panic attack.

Frustration – Knowing what I want and not knowing how to get it. Sometimes it’s even not knowing what I want, but knowing that, whatever it is, I don’t have it.

Depression – That sense of hopelessness, heaviness, and weariness and feeling all alone. It’s sitting for hours in a dark room and not doing anything except fighting a battle of ideas in the mind.

Nightly News – Poor economy, unemployment, racial tensions, scandals, wars, terrorism, unrest in the Middle East, famines, epidemics, and this year’s storm of the century.

Humanity cries out for peace, but there is no peace. The world wants problems to go away, but that doesn’t bring peace, because more problems just come to take their place.

Paul prayed that the Thessalonian church would experience the true peace that only the Lord of Peace could give. That peace would cover every category mentioned above and would last always.

The Lord Jesus wears many titles, but when all the little and big things of life get us down, we need to approach Him as the Lord of Peace. Christ gives peace to those who need it. He owns it. He’s the boss of peace. Where the Savior goes, peace has to follow.

So let stress, anxiety, frustration, depression, and the nightly news be put on notice. If you all come around to bother us, we’re going to call directly on the Lord of Peace.

Foundation

For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 3:11*

Reinforced concrete makes up the majority of modern  foundations. In ancient times, people dug through the top soil until they got down to bedrock. Jesus explained in His Sermon on the Mount that those who got down to the solid rock were wise, because storms and winds won’t bring down their houses. It’s the lazy people that have no foundation. They don’t put the effort into making something that will last. Their houses won’t stand the test of time, proving them to be foolish.

The Lord Jesus is the spiritual foundation of every believer and it’s the nature of foundations to be built upon. Everyone builds their lives on some kind of worldview. If a person has a philosophy of life that lives for the moment and has no concept of God, judgment, or eternity, then it’s as if they had a foundation of sand and their destruction is sure, although maybe not immediate.

Belief in Christ and the Word of God opens potential for greatness that endures forever, but that’s only if faith expresses itself in action. Faith without sweat equity is like a big slab of concrete without a building on it. The Apostle James put it this way, “Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead” (James 2:17).

In God’s eyes, obedience, fervent prayer, meditation on His word, worship, and dedication are comparable to building materials made of gold, silver, and precious stones (1 Corinthians 3:12-13).

When a Christian has the Savior as his sure foundation, but his life is composed of incomplete obedience, hypocrisy, and materialism, it is like building a ramshackle shanty made with cardboard boxes and sheets of plastic on a footing made for a skyscraper. The wasted life results not only in a great loss of reward for the believer at the judgment seat of Christ, but is a terrible insult to the Son of God who laid down His life to become our Foundation.

Most Holy

To make an end of sins, To make reconciliation for iniquity, To bring in everlasting righteousness, To seal up vision and prophecy, And to anoint the Most Holy.
Daniel 9:24

Sometimes in the Old Testament it is difficult to determine if a title of God is referring to God the Father or if it is actually a prophesy of the Christ who was to come. This time it’s not hard at all because it is a part of Daniel’s seventy-weeks prophesy. This section is actually the only place in the Old Testament where the title “Messiah” is given (Daniel 9:25,26  KJV and NKJV) and in the verse above, the One who is called the Most Holy is anointed.

Conditions in an operating room must be nearly 100% sterile. To arrive at that condition, antiseptics and antimicrobial devices are used to kill bacteria on surfaces and in the air. These things are not only sterile, they also make everything around them germ free.

Anything that is holy is free from sin. Since the term Most Holy is superlative, it must be more than 100% sinless and is able to sanctify whatever it touches. In the Old Testament, the phrase refers to things that were used to atone for sin. The inner part of the Sanctuary (1 Kings 6:16) and the bronze altar and its utensils were considered most holy (Exodus 40:10). The priests who interceded for sinners were set apart for service to God and the sin offering and other offerings made by fire were most holy before God (Leviticus 6:17).

All of these Old Testament images are nothing more than types and shadows of God’s Anointed, the Messiah, Jesus Christ. He is the Most Holy of all the most holy things that were ever used for atonement. With His one and only sacrifice on the cross, He was able to make an end of sins, make reconciliation for all mankind, and bring everlasting righteousness to the earth.

Noble

=

Do they not blaspheme that noble name by which you are called?
James 2:7

The apostle James overflowed with contempt towards rich Christians who flaunted their wealth and expected special seating in meetings of the church. He made a rhetorical question to the saints to make them realize what was going on: “Do not the rich oppress you and drag you into the courts?” (James 2:5). He concluded that such behavior blasphemed the noble name of Christ.

Often when we read in the gospels of Christ’s birth in a stable, or the fact that He didn’t even have a roof over His head during His ministry or that He was buried in a borrowed tomb, we envision the Savior in His humanity and forget that He is King of kings.

Jesus was of noble birth and could trace his lineage back to King David. His ancestry went back to Adam who at one point had dominion over all the earth. But His noble origin goes back further yet. He is God, so He is also Lord of lords, the blessed and only Potentate, and King of Glory.

The Lord came to this world to save sinners “and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works” (Titus 2:15). But of those whom He called there were “not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble” (1 Corinthians 1:26). Yet, it is the plan of the Savior that Christians hear “the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience” (Luke 8:15). In other words, He takes those whom the world esteems as lowly and brings them to share in His nobility. He elevates us to be joint heirs.

As a result, we are called on to shed the weak and beggarly elements of our human nature that we were born with and be transformed by the renewing of our minds. The Apostle Paul admonishes believers: “whatever things are true, whatever things are noble […] meditate on these things” (Philippians 4:8). In doing that we’ll never forget that the King of Righteousness is Noble.

Offering

And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us,
an
offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.
Ephesians 5:2

In the Bible, sacrifice and offerings are often mentioned together, but there are important differences. Offerings
compromise the broader category and refer to anything brought to the designated place of worship that is presented as a gift to God. Sacrifices are a sub-group of offerings and refer to food stuffs that are totally or partially burnt on the altar.

Christ came to earth to sacrifice His life as a substitution for mankind’s sins. This wasn’t something the Lord had to do because He owed salvation to Adam’s race but rather was a free will offering. Jesus didn’t have to save us; He chose to save us.

Since the focus was on giving a gift, all offerings are types of Christ and they come in many varieties. The many variations of sweet-smelling sacrifices were all voluntary and precious. Although a lame, blind, or sick animal could be butchered for food, it could not be given to God; it had to be without defect.

Sin and Trespass offerings fall under non-sweet-smelling sacrifices, but also are Old Testament images of Christ. These were not optional; they were required in order to atone for sins. The Lord Jesus willingly became a sin offering in order to impute our sins as His own, because we were unwilling and unable to reconcile ourselves to the Holy God.

Scriptures also link tithes and offerings. A tithe literally means 10% of one’s income and was compulsory for God’s people. Actually, there were three separate tithes required; one for the priests, one for the feasts, and one for the poor every three years. Therefore, tithing would actually come out to be between 20 and 30% any given year. Anything on top of that was considered an offering.

Since Jesus Christ gave Himself 100% to free us from our sins, He is the living embodiment of an offering.
